Baku (Azerbaijani: Bakı), sometimes known as Baqy, Baky, Baki or Bakou, is the capital, the largest city, and the largest port of Azerbaijan and all the Caucasus. Located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, the city consists of two principal parts: the downtown and the old Inner City (21.5 ha). Baku is one of the oldest and biggest cities in East for antiquity, territory and population.
Baku is divided into eleven administrative districts (Azizbayov, Binagadi, Garadagh, Narimanov, Nasimi, Nizami, Sabail, Sabunchu, Khatai, Surakhany and Yasamal). he city center is in style of amphitheatre, has an access to the sea from both sides. The city was built in right-angled direction. Streets are narrow and crooked in Icheri Sheher (Old City). There are Absheron resort and beaches in the city. Absheron is located in 28 m lower than world ocean level, summer is hot and winter is mild here.
Modern Baku is famous all over the world for oil and oil refinery, machinery, building materials industry.
Baku is transport junction. Sea transport possesses one of three leading places. Air flights connect Baku with a number of cities. Railway lines link Baku with Russia, Iran and Georgia.
It is located in south of Absheron Peninsula in west of Caspian Sea in the latitude of 40°, 23' and longitude of 49°, 51'.
Level of rainfall is low and temperature is a bit high in Baku, located in the same latitude with Italy and Greece. Caspian is not frozen in this latitude, because of this Baku port operates all the year long. Average annual temperature in Baku is close to the one of earth – 26 Degree in July, 3 Degree in January. Annual rainfall is 180-300 mm.
Climate in south-west of Big Baku is drier. Annual rainfall is lower than 150 mm here, Khezri – north wind and Gilavar – south wind are specific.
There are mineral waters (Shykh, Surakhani), mud volcanoes (Keyreki, Khojahasan) around the city.
Baku is scientific and cultural center of the country. First opera, first university, first newspaper, first library in East were created in Baku.
* Azerbaijan State Museum of Art - is the biggest art museum of Azerbaijan. The museum consists of two buildings standing next to each other. Seven of the rooms in the first building feature European art, and ten Russian art.

A number of historical monuments in Baku city have been protected so far. These include Maiden Tower, Castle Walls of XII century, Shirvanshah Palace built in XV century in the highest part of the castle, Bukharalilar Caravanserai of XIV-XVI centuries, Juma Mosque and etc.
